Kaylee Strobel

Kaylee grew up in Surrey, BC and graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2014. She moved to Bella Coola after graduation to cover Veronica Carrier's Maternity leave. Kaylee instantly fell in love with Acwsalcta and the Bella Coola Valley and is on her third year of teaching Kindergarten. She plans on staying at Acwsalcta for as long as possible.

Veronica Carrier

Veronica Carrier moved from Ontario in 2012 to teach Kindergarten at Acwsalcta School. She has been teaching there every since. She is working on becoming a Kindergarten Specialist. Currently she is on Maternity leave, with her second child. She will be returning to Acwsalcta as the Kindergarten Teacher in September 2017.

Ximlaycana (Desirée Danielson)

Desiree Danielson is from Bella Coola, BC; she is the daughter of Barbara Saunders and Kent Danielson. She graduated from University of Washington with a Bachelor Degree in English: Creative Writing, and received her Bachelor of Education from University of British Columbia in 2013. She is currently working on her Masters Degree in Literacy K-12. She has been working as the Grade 1 Teacher at Acwsalcta school for three years, and was a Learning Assistant for one year previously. Desiree enjoys running, playing the ukulele, and spending time with her dogs, when not spending time with the Nuxalk Nation's leaders of tomorrow, otherwise known as the Grade 1 class.

Todd Morrow

Todd Morrow was born and raised just outside of Toronto Ontario.  He spent most of his time as a child playing basketball, baseball, and boxing.  Todd Attended Ryerson School of Business, University of Guelph, and Laurier's Bachelor of Education program.  He has worked in many different northern communities both teaching and in administrative positions.  When not teaching, you can find Todd lifting weights, mountain biking, getting tattooed or playing with his Bulldogs.

Lori Conley

Lori Conley graduated from Avondale College in Australia with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and Design in 1996. She worked as a free-lance Graphic Artist for a while before returning to School at Malaspina College in Nanaimo to do a Bachlor of Arts in Education. She has been a certified teacher for 12 years. She worked as the Grade 8/9 Alternate Education teacher at Sir Alexander Mackenzie High School for a year before moving to Acwsalcta School. Lori taught grades 7-9 English at Acwsalcta for a year before switching to grade 2. She taught grade 2 for one year and then switched to grade 3 where she has been ever since

Sara Brown

Sara is originally from the Okanagan area of BC. She relocated to Bella Coola from Vancouver and has been residing in the valley for four years. This is Saras fourth year teaching Grade 4 at Acwsalcta. She enjoys taking long walks off of short piers and her favorite saying is "I couldn't fail to disagree less."

Kaila Pidwerbeski

Kaila teaches fifth grade. She is a travel enthusiast and loves to read. Kaila attended The University of British Columbia where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in International Relations. She then pursued an Education degree from the University of Victoria. Kaila graduated from her education program in 2016. This year is her first year teaching and she is thrilled to be able to work in a stunning school within a beautiful valley.

Nerissa Montie

Nerissa Montie—now featuring fifteen years of teaching experience! You may have seen her in such schools as Bella Bella Community School. Now see her in the role of grade five teacher at Acwsalcta School in the Bella Coola Valley. She brings her love of the wide, wide world to your classroom door and may even throw in a little archaeology from her background, too. Her first degree took her to New Brunswick where she studied geography, but family and work in forestry brought her back to the west coast. Katy originally came to Acwsalcta as a student teacher, and is delighted to continue teaching and learning here today.

Kim Baglot

Kim Baglot teaches grade 6/7 in the Nuxalk Nature Middle School. She grew up in the Lower Mainland and is a member of the Metis Nation of BC. She has an undergraduate degree in Science from UBC and an education degree from VIU. Before coming to Acwsalcta, Kim worked teaching marine biology and experiential outdoor education at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre for 4 years and then headed the High-School Math and Science department at a BC off-shore school in South Korea for 3 years.

Laura Mclennan

Laura McLennan teaches high school English, Socials and First Nations Studies. She grew up in Vancouver and is a member of the Metis Nation of BC. She has an undergraduate degree in First Nations Studies, an education degree in Secondary Social Studies and a masters degree in Adult Learning with a focus on indigenous schools. Before coming to Acwsalcta, Laura taught at an off-shore school in Thailand for 4 years and then she worked with the Vancouver School Board for 2 years.

Michael Worsley

Michael attended the University of British Columbia in Kelowna and Vancouver before moving to Bella Coola. He is excited to contribute in the community through teaching high school science and outdoor education. Michael is also an avid backcountry skier, trail runner, and squash player.

Laura Nugent

Laura is from Ireland. She studied Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Limerick. She first move to Bella Coola in 2012 where she worked as an assistant manager at the Government wharf and fell in love with Bella Coola and the Nuxalk people. In 2013 she decided to return to school to complete her teaching certificate at the University of Brighton England. Upon graduating she returned to Bella Coola as a Math teacher, Laura enjoys hiking with her dogs, cooking and swimming. Laura is looking forward to making Bella Coola her new home.

Nusqwaxw (Foster Walkus)

Foster was born and raised in Bella Coola. He started working at Acwsalcta in 1999 as the Nuxalk Art Teacher and has taught many different Nuxalk cultural classes. He received his Independent Teachers Certificate in 2004 and in 2013 went on to attain a Bachelor of Arts in Education through the University of British Columbia/N.I.T.E.P. Foster is currently teaching Grade 8/9 English, Computers, Careers and Nuxalk Language.

Martha Finch

Martha graduated from the University of Guelph in 2014 where she studied Fine Art and History. She also attended Nipissing University where she received her Bachelor of Education. She is ecstatic to be in Bella Coola now and to work with the Nuxalk Nation by promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle at Acwsalcta School.

Holly Poell

Holly is our Alternative Education Teacher at Acwsalcta for the third year in a row. Holly has a degree in Indigenous Environmental Studies and a Bachelor's of Education with a focus on history and Indigenous education. She came to us from Peterborough, Ontario with her Newfy Dog in tow and has never looked back.

Sun-Hwrna (Eleanor Schooner)

Sun-Hwrna is the daughter of Chief Lamus, Joseph Saunders Sr. from Kimsquit, Nutl’l and Matriarch Qwatsinas, Addie nee Siwallace from Kimsquit, Siwaluus.  She is able to provide food and shelter for herself and family from the teachings of her mother who was taught by her mother in law, medicine woman, Matriarch Sun-Hwrna of Kimsquit.  After her marriage to Chief Sats’alanlhh from Bella Coola, Tsmuulh, the continuation of her traditional teachings came from his uncle 7u yu, Louie Goose and his parents, sisters and brothers. Sun-Hwrna is respectful of the cultural traditions, teachings and art forms of our people from the Land.
