Mission Staement
We believe in fostering a caring school climate that nurtures and encourages life-long learning within a culturally vibrant and involved community.
Goals
!. To improve the academic standards by:
Implementing a school-wide program to promote Reading and Math literacy run by qualified teachers;
Maintaining a timetable that facilitates the easy movement of students from one level to another;
Ensuring that each teacher knows the Reading and Math learning objectives for previous and subsequent grades, in order to ensure that the students are completely prepared for the next level.
2. To promote the teaching of Nuxalk cultural skills and values by:
Organizing events with themes that promote Nuxalk culture;
Organizing art shows, with community involvement and student work for sale;
Organizing cultural trips and possible exchanges to other native schools and communities;
Holding an Arts Festival;
Encouraging Students to paint murals;
Establishing a Cultural Centre in the Nuxalk room, to encourage parents and community members, especially elders, to visit the school.
3. To promote the use of twenty-first-century technology by:
Creating a course to teach skills related to using still and video photography tools;
Encouraging students to explore multimedia technology by producing photographic essays and documentaries that explore community issues.
4. To promote parent and community involvement by:
supporting a Parent Committee that meets monthly;
Planning events that involve parents;
Establishing an "Elder Involvement" program, where elders are "adopted" by a school division.
5. To promote extra-curricular activities by:
Requiring each staff member to lead/coordinate at least three extra-curricular activities, or participate in their planning and organizing;
Designating a community coordinator to facilitate communication between teachers and parents/community members with regard to extra-curricular activities such as knitting, dream catchers, beading, crocheting, and leather work, etc.
